We've had a pair of female gerbils for just over a year and it is possible* that one of them has died suddenly. As you'd expect, the two of them have spent lots of time grooming each other and sleeping curled up together and, if one has died, the survivor is going to be alone for the first time.
Does it make sense to get one or more new (female) gerbils or is this a recipe for fights and an even more unhappy situation?
* Why don't I know? They have a large tank with lots of burrowing material, so they're not always visible, but one has not been seen for over 24 hours even at feeding time. I'm going to empty the tank to check today.
